OMAHA, NEB.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Harbor Association of Industry & Commerce (HAIC) of Southern California has honored Union Pacific Railroad with its "Salute to Industry" award. Union Pacific was recognized for its air pollution reduction and environmental stewardship efforts, along with the railroad's significant contribution to the improvement of the business environment with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach.

"We are grateful to the HAIC for recognizing us with this award," said Scott Moore, Union Pacific vice president, public affairs. "In addition, we are proud to be a partner with the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach in developing and implementing a course for viable, long-term economic growth while at the same time taking steps to improve our environmental footprint."

Union Pacific operates the cleanest locomotive fleet of any North American railroad:

  • The company has added more than 3,300 new fuel-efficient, long-haul, high-horsepower locomotives since 2000.
  • More than 2,200 older locomotives have been retired.
  • Approximately 2,800 locomotive diesel engines have been overhauled or rebuilt.
  • More than two-thirds of Union Pacific's 8,400 locomotives are certified under existing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 0, Tier 1 and Tier 2 emission standards.

Union Pacific developed the technology for the Genset switching locomotive, which reduces emissions of oxides of nitrogen by 80 percent and particulate matter by 90 percent. It also uses up to 37 percent less fuel compared to older switching locomotives, translating into a greenhouse gas reduction of up to 37 percent. Union Pacific operates by far the industry's largest Genset fleet with 165, more than half of the entire Genset fleet in service at all railroads worldwide. Union Pacific has 66 Gensets is service in California, 60 in the Los Angeles basin.

The HAIC, created in 1975, is a non-profit professional industrial organization formed to initiate, sponsor and promote policies to further enhance development of commerce and industry in Southern California.
