Air Supremacy

Car Craft Tackles the Central Pneumatic Air Compressor
Air tools are convenient time-savers, and can be fun when performing tasks like whizzing off lug nuts with an impact wrench. But, when doing bodywork, it's not just convenient to have an air compressor on hand, it's essential.
In the November 2012 issue of Car Craft, John McGann shared how, while working on a past project, his team's home air compressor couldn't keep up the air demands of their spray gun.
"We could spray for about a minute before the air pressure began to drop, and when that happens, the spray pattern changes and becomes inconsistent, and we'd have to stop and wait for the compressor to charge back up. When spraying a solid color enamel, painting the car panel-by-panel is possible, but metallics and pearls need to cover the car all in one coat. If not, the pattern of the effects will vary from one panel to the other."
John concluded that, to do the job right, get the biggest air compressor you can afford.
"Compressor horsepower ratings and tank volume are good selling points, but the real spec to be concerned with is the CFM rating. This rating refers to the volume of air the compressor can deliver at a given pressure, usually 90 psi."
Although the compressor he was using had a 9 CFM rating, it wasn't able to maintain enough air volume and pressure to power a sander or grinder for more than 30 seconds. Because it couldn't keep up, the pressure dropped to around 60 psi and the motor continuously kept running. Consequently, moisture from the air got into the tank and water began to spray out of the air line.
"You don't have to know a thing about painting cars to know that water in the paint will will ruin the paint job."
After careful research, the team decided upon the Central Pneumatic 5 Horsepower, 60 Gallon, 165 PSI Two Stage Air Compressor (the manufacturer recently changed its name from U.S. General). With a 15.8 CFM rating at 90 psi, this reliable two-piston compressor's got capacity to spare for a pro auto paint job, where the spray gun (the most demanding air tool) usually requires 12 CFM at 45 psi for proper performance.
The Car Craft team also installed a Central Pneumatic Industrial Air Filter Regulator, which manages air pressure and separates foreign matter and water, maintaining a steady 90 psi of dry, clean air, as well as Central Pneumatic 3' Lead Air Hose, capable of 200 psi working pressure.
Now the latest of a long list of car enthusiast magazines, Car Craft affirms the value and performance of the products at Harbor Freight Tools.

Freight forwarder plays integral part of transportation process

by Ellen Welby

The freight forwarder plays an integral part in the transportation process. Freight forwarders act on behalf of the exporter in arranging ocean or air transport services. They are familiar with the import rules and regulations of foreign countries, methods of shipping, U.S. Government export regulations and documents connected with foreign trade.

Freight forwarders can provide a number of services. During the initial planning phases, they can help choose the carrier and the most economical shipment size. At the beginning of the sale, the freight forwarder can provide an exporter with quotations on a number of costs. This information can be used in preparing an accurate price quotation to foreign customers.

At the shipper's request, the freight forwarder can make the actual arrangements and provide the necessary services for expediting the shipment to its overseas destination. This can include:

--Providing advise on foreign import regulations,

--Arranging for inland transportation,

--Booking space with the ocean or air carrier,

--Completing export documentation,

--Arranging for cargo insurance,

--Providing guidance on packaging, marking and labeling,

--Arranging for products to be packed and containerized,

--Freight consolidation, but this is not a standard service.

Freight forwarders operate on a fee basis paid by the exporter. The fees consist of an agreed-upon amount, plus documentation charges. The cost for the services should be figured into the price charged to the customer. Freight forwarders also collect a percentage of the freight costs from the carrier.

There are several criteria to consider when selecting a freight forwarder:

1) Is the freight forwarder licensed or approved by the appropriate entities?

Ocean freight forwarders must be licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission to handle ocean cargo. Although not legally required, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) registers freight forwarders to deal with international air cargo shipments.

Freight is a word applied to describe the shipping of goods and is sometimes a commercial procedure. Items are ordinarily set up into various shipment families before they are sent.
This is dependent on a lot of factors:

- The nature of the item being sent off, i.e. a kettle can fit into the list 'household goods'.
- How large the shipment is, both in terms of item size and amount.
- How long the item for sending will be in transit.
- Payloads are ordinarily listed as household goods, express, parcel, and freight Items.

Furniture, artistic productions, or similar Shipments are mostly separated as household goods.

Very small business or personal shipments like envelopes are looked at as overnight express or express letter items. These shipments are rarely over a few pounds, and nearly always go in the carriers own packaging. Service degrees are variable, depending on the shippers choice. Express items nearly always travel some of the way by air. An envelope could go coast to coast overnight or it may take numerous days, based on the service selections and prices chosen.

Larger shipments like small boxes are regarded as parcel or ground loads. These loadings are seldom over 100 pounds, with no single piece of the article weighing more than about 70 pounds. Shipments are usually boxed, sometimes in the shippers packaging and occasionally in carrier-provided packaging. Service grades are again variable; but almost all ground cargos will move nearly 500-700 miles per day, going coast to seashore in roughly four days depending on origin. Parcel dispatches not usually journey by air, and generally move via road and rail. Parcels comprise the majority of business-to-consumer (B2C) despatches.

Other than HHG, express, and parcel dispatches, movements are referred to as freight shipments.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight:

The first class of freight article is less than truckload (LTL). LTL carriers trailers are typically 28' long and complete utilization of a 28' pup is considered capacity. Unlike express or parcel, LTL shippers must provide their own packaging, as LTL carriers do not provide any packaging supplies or assistance.

Truckload (TL) freight:

In the United States of America goods heavier than approximately 15,000 pounds are generally classified as truckload (TL) in that it is most economical to only use a truck rather than share it in an LTL environment.
The gross weight of a truck (tractor trailer 5 axle rig) in the U.S cannot exceed 80,000 in ordinary circumstances. Under the current U.S. truck pricing model, adding more to a load costs nothing more.

Plans for increasing load size include: consolidating orders onto the truck using a Transportation management system. Here the "optimal combination of orders and stops can be used to fill out the truck. When shipping freight, it is exceedingly crucial to know about pricing, claims, and insurance.

How freight pricing works:

Some common accessorial charges are: Liftgate: this is a service that assists the driver in loading or unloading his truck when a loading dock or forklift is not available. The trailer is equipped with a hydraulic ramp that lowers to the ground. Liftgate service is almost always billed on residential pickups or deliveries and in commercial pickup and deliveries where loading docks or forklifts are not available. Only a small percentage of most trucking companies trailers are equipped with liftgates so movements requiring liftgates must be communicated to the carrier in advance.

Another cost-saving method is facilitating pickups or deliveries at the carriers terminals. By doing this, shippers avoid any accessorial fees that might normally be charged for liftgate, residential pickup/delivery, inside pickup/delivery or notifications/appointments. Carriers or intermediaries can provide shippers with the address and phone number for the closest shipping terminal to the origin and/or destination.

Cargo insurance:

About 10% of all freight shipments will experience some significant loss or damage. It is a common misconception that a freight rate includes full coverage insurance, when in fact a base freight rate typically includes only a bare minimum of cargo insurance. A shipper should always ask their carrier or intermediary what the insurance coverage is for every specific shipment. LTL shipments will often be insured for less than 25 cents per pound, and TL shipments will often be insured for only slightly more than LTL shipments. Most TL carriers have maximum cargo insurance of $100,000 for the entire load; but for a 40,000 load, thats only about $2.50 per pound.

Harbor Freight Or Grizzly?

If you are looking for a one-stop centre for power tools, there are two candidates that you should consider. The choices are Harbor Freight Tools and Grizzly Tools. Both parties have almost similar items and services to offer and they operate along the same lines of business. So, if you are given a choice, a gun to your head, which are you going to choose?

First, let us review their pros and cons one by one. Harbor Freight Tools boasts to have the largest collection of tools than any other retailer. In addition to that, they claim to have the lowest prices that will soundly beat any competitor's (for select items only). Walk into a Harbor Freight store and you will be looking at over 7000 products which bear popular brand names such as DeWalt, Chicago Electric, Pittsburg, Makita, Central Machinery, Central Hydraulic, Stanley, Central Forge and many others. These brands are well-known for their high quality and convenient use.

Harbor Freight seems unbeatable when it comes to reputation. It's been around for over 40 years and has served 5 million happy customers. Its customer base is looking to grow as they are expanding their empire. Currently, not only do they have a dozen retail outlets all over the United States, it's also possible to shop for tools online.

Grizzly Tools, although not popular, has catered to everyone, from casual hobbyists to professional construction workers. What sets Grizzly Tools apart from Harbor Freight is the fact that their tools all bear the Grizzly emblem.

Selling their own product, instead of someone else's, drastically reduced the average price of their items. Customers are more content to buy items direct from the manufacturer instead of middlemen; for fear that the items had been tampered with when it changed hands. Aside from that, Grizzly Tools can also be ordered online and has stores in Pennsylvania, Washington and Missouri.

After comparing the two manufacturers, there is no doubt that both have their own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to their products. Harbor Freight Tools sell well-known and quality products and Grizzly Tools sell their own brands for lower prices. Either retailer can be of more value to you, depending on your preference.

Harbor Freight Tools pursuing Route 3 site

Harbor Freight Tools soon may come to outer Arsenal Street.

The automotive, power tool and outdoor equipment store based in Camarillo, Calif., may locate in the former home of Rex TV & Appliance, 20839 Route 3.

The town of Watertown Planning Board approved a resolution that should enable the owner of the property, Klaff Realty LP, Chicago, Ill., to avoid a full site plan review. The only aspect of the site that will change is the signage.

The resolution requires the real estate company to submit a contract by Jan. 13 to the town committing to signs shown to the board during its meeting Monday night.

"The free-standing sign can be no greater than 24 feet and the Planning Board must be consulted on the planter at the base," co-chairman Thomas E. Boxberger said. "If the contract is received by the deadline, the chair will be authorized to act on the part of the Planning Board and the rest of the site review process will be waived."

The sign plan includes reducing the free-standing sign by 8 feet from 32 feet, changing the sign on the building and removing the neon light strip that runs around the building.

The lease and other paperwork have yet to be finalized, said attorney David B. Guertsen, of Conboy, McKay, Bachman & Kendall, Watertown.

The nearest Harbor Freight store is on Route 11 in North Syracuse.

During the meeting, the board also approved the site plan for a building to house Mr. Rick's Bakery on Lot 7 in the Jefferson County Corporate Park.

The board also approved a site plan for Alice Andrew Salon, 21243 Route 12F, in a former insurance building.

Co-owner Shaynna B. Adams said the salon could be open in February.
